How is artificial intelligence affecting job searches?

CBS News Sunday Morning takes a hard look at current  job statistics – notably that “job postings are down 36%.”

That’s a quote from Laura Olrich, who is the director of research at Indeed, a major job listings website.

But the statistic can be highly misleading. It doesn’t tell the whole story, which has to be placed within context. 

As Ms. Olrich explains, AI is a factor in the downturn in job postings, but that this downturn had already been occurring prior to the widespread use of AI. (A search I performed on Google places this as early as 2012).

Ms. Olrich attributes the decline to 2 other major factors:

  • Over hiring by companies during the “tech boom” of 2011-22.
  • The economic uncertainty introduced by tariffs.
